0 messages? Getting nudged by the wrong ones? Are you running in a corn field hoping to find prince charming or are you running out of options? It depends, did you check up on your profile lately? Just like you needed that hair cut to boost up your confidence in the new year of 2010, your online profile might need just the same, a makeover! As gays, we set up the best looks, the best attitudes and we go after the good people, but when it comes to online dating… [Long pause], we just keep on receiving failure notices! We set up free online profiles, we upload the sexiest pictures, we’re either too good to be approached, and that’s not the issue, or we’re approached by the wrong guys, and that's when setting the wrong image. Few things we’ve been missing on, little things we’ve discarded, and those little things are keys to enhance our profiles, appealing to others as a date material. My.Kali.mag has collaborated with the Gaydar.co.uk team on the profile make-over project, bringing you the best tips to groom up your profile.
Profile names
Your profile is your book, give it a good title and you’re ready to go! A catchy name that says something about you that sounds intelligently appealing could be a mouse-clicker! Slutty calls, numbers and years, celebrities’ names and so on could sound either boring or uninteresting, setting you off with a bad start. You can tell a lot by the title since it starts by either attracting viewers or sending them to the next!
Image-wise
Photos are profile-essential, they’re the spokesperson of the profile, without photos, it’s like talking to someone from behind the wall, it’s uncomforting to the person in front of you, you’ll be much more ignored when having a photo-less profile. “You’re much more likely to receive messages from guys if they can see upfront what you look like. Men are visual creatures so you’re unlikely to be offered a blind date. Plus that’s a scary thought, you never know who might show up on your date!” says Says UK Gaydar’s product manager Simon Johnson.
Online profiles are different from real life’s impressions, but quite similar in few things. People look at you before talking to you, same thing in your profile, they see what kind of photos you upload… if you’re photos are too revealing, and you’ll probably be approached by the people who want physical calls, it’s up to you on what kind of impression you want to give people out there. “If you’re looking for a relationship and love, stick with the shots your family would be proud of. Stay away from photos of your pet, your profile is about you – you’ll have plenty of time to go into detail about everything else once you get to know the guy.” Simon.
Things to write
When filling up your main boxes, take two things in consideration, avoid having long writes and short ones as well! Long written boxes make the reader feels like he’s reading the personal column in a paper! It’s not that you’re not sure of what you want, or are, but the fact that you put it out all there makes it hard to check all the points which narrows the possibility of getting to know other unexpectedly charming individuals! Too short writings will give the impression of un-seriousness, making the person who’s interested uncomfortable with just looking at your sexy pictures, he'd be wanting more… showing what you’re interested in, looking for, so it helps others to vote themselves to be candidates (hopefully candy-dates!). Shortcutting your writings will only shorten your possibility of being approached (check the box-pic Up, how it's short and uninteresting)! So write things that interests you in guys, write something witty and smart and make sure to use the keyboard of positivity for your own benefit. “Be open and honest about what you’re looking for, but stay away from writing an essay. Keep light, approachable and steer clear from making comments like ‘I’m very good looking’.” Simon says.
Things we forget
It could feel like a race! You just get in, fill in the boxes with whatever and get the hell out! It’s not quite the project you know! Many ignore the section on hobbies and favorites (picture: Up, right), not knowing its impact! People always look for common interests in others, this offer a common ground in a way. When liking a guy and finding something common between you two, it could work as a convo starter without appearing helpless, and who knows, it might lead to a date! So don’t forget to share your favorite book, food, show… those will give more keys to sending more messages. It’s all about showing interests and commons, the rest will speak for itself. "The usual thing that most people forget to mention in their profiles is what they’re looking for!” Says Simon.
