Mystical Meditation for
Everyday Living
By: Quillan Windtalker
Nowadays, the new age genre is increasing more than ever. People are becoming more interested in self help, spirituality, and meditation. Meditation is an ancient tool that has been used by mystics and priests for more than ten thousand years to increase their focus and powers.
There are multiple benefits to meditation. One of them is that it gives the practitioner an instant sense of inner peace. Meditation also grants a regular practitioner heightened focus and a clearer mind; this personally helped me during school time exams. Also, yoga practitioners report that after a while of meditating they get the feeling that they’re floating off the ground.
Mediation is often confused with relaxation. Relaxation is about relaxing, while meditation is about focusing. Another misunderstanding is that meditation is about sitting cross legged while holding strange hand gestures and trying to empty ones mind. Meditation is simply the act of centering yourself. It is about focusing all of your attention on a single point.
A common Hindu saying goes to say: “The mind is like a monkey, it likes to play”. While the mind is playing around you’re not using your mind power to its full potential. There is no point in trying to catch the monkey and put it in a cage and throw the key. Instead, we want to get the mind interested on focusing on a single thought.
Here is a simple meditation technique that you can incorporate into your everyday life. It involves counting your breath as you inhale and exhale. You can do this while sitting down, standing up, or lying in bed. The ideal thing to do is to maintain a straight back through out the process.
1. Sit down in a comfortable position, close your eyes, and begin to relax.
2. Become aware of your breathing pattern, your inhalations and exhalations.
3. On your next inhalation, count the seconds it takes you to take in a breath. (Ideally you want to balance it out to a count of 4).
4. Hold the breath for an equal count (ideally a count of 4).
5. Now exhale for double the count you inhaled. (Ideally a count of 8).
Repeat the process several times; try to reach a daily practice of 5 minutes in the morning and in the night. Try it out for yourself and see, feel, and live the wonders it will do to you.
