Gay Rainy Days!
By: Albaloo Pollo
One of my New Year’s resolutions is to look at the weather in a different light. Generally, when I wake up in my dorm room bed to the noise of thin little pellets hitting the ground, my head immediately falls straight back to the comfort of my pillow and, automatically, a sigh of frustration wrinkles the smile on my lips. But no. This year will be different. Next time when I wake up and peer out my window to see a cloudy sky and wet ground, I will rejoice! There are only a few times I have taken this approach; however, I am adamant to turn those few times into every time reactions.
This past year, on a frigid October day, my ex-boyfriend and I decided to be adventurous and turn the miserable, confining, rainy day into our playground. On a whim, we peeled off our clothes, all the way down to our boxers and undershirts, slipped on sandals, and ran down the hallway and out the door. In retrospect, if we had actually thought our actions through, and felt the cold icy drops of water on our skin, we would have never decided to leave the comforts of my bed.
After stepping into the giant puddles of freezing water, the regret started to sneak in, but I kept forcing it out of my thoughts, concentrating only on the movement of my legs. We had a goal in mind. We would get to the soccer fields and frolic about in the muddy grass! Our screaming, shouting, and yelling must have caused the conglomerate of college students living in the nearby residential complexes to think a couple of madmen were running about!
Finally, with shivering, nearly naked bodies, we reached the field. At this point, we were perplexed and cold, and didn’t know what to do. Suddenly, on impulse, I kicked a loose gathering of mud onto my ex, and he yelled with playful disgust. He reciprocated right after, and we continued to wrestle and wallow in the mud for about 20 minutes.
At this point, the cold weather and sticky, wet ground seemed to heat up with romance. The temperature was meaningless to me. My full concentration was on the boy in front of me. After sufficiently lathering ourselves, our rapidly declining body warmth hit us, and we decided to race back inside. Rather than screaming, we laughed our way back to the dorm, spitting jokes and coquetry towards each other.
As this story illustrates, you can take advantage of the rain. You can turn dreary into delightful and the routine into romance. Normally, we consider romance to be only on those sunny days in the park and tidy little picnics alongside shady trees. This paradigm can and must be broken. If we refuse to open our minds up to the wonderful possibilities that nature in all its states presents us, we will forever be confined and, at times, unhappy as a result of the inevitable forces that govern this world. It is not the sun and the warmth that can make rain fun, it is us.
But let us not ignore also those summery days sprinkled with torrential downpours. As hard as it is to imagine in the dead of winter (at least for those of us unfortunate enough to live in arctic like regions!), the rain serves as a relief to the steamy July and August days. Again, though, many people refuse to embrace Mother Nature’s natural coolant, as it bestows upon humanity a respite from the heat. This should be your plan:
1. Find out which days will be rainy
2. Mark your calendar
3. Rummage through your closet and grab your swimsuit
4. Convince your friend or significant other to do the same
5. Find a suitable area, whether it be a park, garden, backyard, and
enjoy the water.
When the day finally arrives, grab a ball or just take a walk, allowing the water add a new dimension to your everyday conversation and fun. We are so used to being outside when it’s dry that we never experiment with its converse. Even if you feel as though you are suffering at first, it will soon turn to laughter, especially as the rain fills your mouth when you talk and dislodges the words as they formulate on your tongue. You could really have a great time!
Finally, after the wanderlust and sense of adventure leave your system, what better activity is there than to dry off and cuddle with your lover! If with a boy you like, set up a nice blanket to cuddle under, letting your bodies and hair slowly evaporate the remaining water. Popping in a movie, eating fresh fruit and just enjoying each other’s warmth is a cheap, yet romantic alternative to going out and exploring. Maybe even cook a meal together. Cooking has always been called the sport of lovers. However, if you are with a friend, drying off, grabbing some food and watching a movie present as equally appealing activities; just minus the romance.
Rain, romance, and fun are inextricably linked, and you must take advantage of this relationship. Even if that means sitting on your balcony or porch, listening music of nature, make sure to not hide from the rain as though it is a predator looking to ruin your night. Remember, every moment can be taken advantage of, even if at first it doesn’t appear this way!
