TOO WILD TO LIVE, TOO
BEAUTIFUL TO DIE...
It’s early 80’s New York. Studio 54, designer jeans, drugs and disco. One girl is living life in the fast lane. She can have any man-woman she wants. Sex, glamour, fame, it’s all within her reach. She walks towards you across the dance floor, struts towards you down the runway, stares at you from the cover of a magazine. She's pain, she's gay, she's love and she’s you and she’s me, and she’s a star. Her name is GIA.
THING OF BEAUTY
“I could learn photography. That could be something I want. I could photograph children, I could have my own children, I would give them yellow roses, and if they got too loud I would just put them in some place quiet, you know, put them in the oven, and I would kiss them every day, and tell them you don’t have to be anybody, because I would know that being somebody doesn’t make you anybody anyway”
PRMOISES IN THE DARK
“You know what I think? I think there’s a reason for everything, and I think that there’s a plan for everybody, and I think that God has bigger plans for me, just not in this life."
EDGE OF SEVENTEEN
“Dear book,
This is another day in a life, a life is like a book, a book is like a box, a box has six sides, inside and outside, so how you get to what’s inside, how you get to what’s inside out. Once upon a time there was a very pretty girl who lived in a beautiful box and everybody loved her.”
MID-NIGHT POISON
“life and death, energy and peace, if I stopped today it’s still worth it, even the terrible mistakes that I have made, and would’ve un-made if I could, the pains that’ve burned and scarred my soul, it was worth it, or have been allowed to walk were I’ve walked, which was, to hell on earth, heaven on earth, back again, into, under, far in between, through it, in it, and above.”
Gia: "you don't have to do this. You don't have to get high, you don't have to run from things because it doesn't get you anywhere. Look at where it got me"
Gia: "i'm sick, i don't feel good, i don;t have any where to go...i think i have AIDS"
WHAT ABOUT THE SHOOT?
Our photo shoot is inspired by the journals and fairy tales the 80’s supermodel Gia wrote in her Diaries. Knowing that her words and her journey inspired millions and her unforgettable face spoke a lot. Being gay was a whole different story. And the struggle of her inner conflicts has taught us so much about her. Gia died on the 18th of November 1986 at the age of 26, let that day live forever.
