Dear Summer,
"Never a day has passed by without me day-dreaming of being saved! Yes! Saved! To many, Tartus seemed an odd destination for a young family, but my family was passionate about it. Summer was always the time that my family would pack up the bags and head to city Tartus, a city in the neighboring Syria that lies on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea, bordered by the Alawite Mountains to the east. And there always would my summer stories begin. Road tripping to a 300 acre citrus farm-forest, living in a 3-floored crooked white house that my grandfather has built in 1971, a house that haunts my psyche.
The farm is right by the coast, and it was the sanctuary of my childhood; it simply used to be the playground to a lot of my day dreams. The images of the citrus trees and the palms leaning over the waters imprinted themselves on my brain, appearing in my childhood stories and drawings for years to come. Family albums are always amusing. One picture I cherish is of me and my cousin, wearing pink and blue trainings, I was holding a sugar cane stick and she was holding a ball, walking through the high green grass and posing for the camera! She's my childhood savory, and till now, we’re inseparable.
However, I dreaded the long drives, but always enjoyed the Syrian radio music selections and break stops, one I recall had a small bird-zoo in the playground, me and my cousins would run to it to watch all kinds of birds. And the farm would eventually be worth the wait. Elissa's hit single 'Aychalak' was just released, and bits of her album were played everywhere, making that album the background music to whole trip. As it was a summer album then, now associating the songs to that trip, flash backs of riding across Syria tackle certain pleasant imagery.
